Become a Peer Writing Tutor

If you love writing and working with others on their writing, consider becoming a drop-in peer writing tutor!

About Peer Writing Tutors

Who are Peer Writing Tutors?

Peer Writing Tutors offer drop-in hours in the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking (Building 250) and at several satellite locations across campus.

What do Peer Writing Tutors do?

Peer Writing Tutors work with all Stanford student writers.  In one-to-one conferences, writing tutors help students get started on assignments; address and overcome writer's block; apply revision, editing, and proofreading strategies; and understand academic conventions in their fields. Approximately 35 undergraduate peer writing tutors work alongside advanced graduate students and PWR Lecturers in the Hume Center and also provide writing support in PWR 1 classes.

Requirements for being a Peer Writing tutor

All Stanford undergraduates are invited to apply to become Hume Center peer writing tutors (based in the Center or in a satellite location around campus). The application process is competitive; every year in February, 12-15 new tutors are hired. During the spring quarter, new tutors take a 3-credit training course, PWR 195, and then begin tutoring the following fall.  Peer tutors are chosen on the strength of their application, letters of recommendations, and an interview.

The Spring 2024 tutor training course, PWR195, will be held on Fridays from 9:30-11:20 a.m.

Peer tutors must be legally eligible to work in the United States and must not exceed the limits on hourly work outlined in Administrative Guide 10.1.1.

Starting rate is $20.00 per hour and tutors are hired for 6 hours a week. Evening and Sunday hours are strongly encouraged.
