About

Becky Richardson is a Lecturer in PWR. She attended Mount Holyoke College and holds a Ph.D. in English from Stanford University. Having recently taught courses on "The Rhetoric of the Confession," "The Rhetoric of Coming of Age," and "The Rhetoric of Sympathy," she is especially interested in encouraging her students to think about the relationship between writing, expression, empathy, and identity. Her research interests also include the rhetoric of inspiration and self-help, nineteenth-century British literature, socioeconomic mobility, environmental studies, and the medical humanities. She is currently researching the representation of ambition in the nineteenth century, and has written articles on confessions in Sense and Sensibility, the self-help narrative in Victorian literature, and the overlapping rhetoric of political economy and health in Austen's Sanditon.
