WIM Faculty Resources

Hume workshop

Writing in the Major (WIM) classes are an important part of undergraduates' writing experience at Stanford. Here, we have assembled resources to support faculty members as they incorporate writing into their WIM course.

Hume Center Writing Support

Hume Center staff are available to consult and otherwise support the design and implementation of your WIM course in the following ways:

  • TA Support: We can meet with your TAs or CAs to help them develop effective strategies for supporting students' writing or developing writing exercises for sections or homework. The Hume Center also offers a workshop once a quarter for TAs and CAs on effective commenting and grading strategies. Email Chris Kamrath to find out when the next workshop is.
  • In-class Workshops: We can provide writing workshops—in or out of class—tailored to your course writing assignments and the specific needs of your students.  Topics might include: the process of writing a long essay, writing literature reviews, using evidence, building complex arguments, or integrating data into a text.
  • Tutoring: Trained writing consultants can supplement your students’ course learning by guiding them through the writing process and helping them to develop a thesis, organize an essay, or fine-tune paragraphs and sentences.
  • Consultations: Our staff can meet with faculty or instructors to discuss effective ways to integrate writing activities and assignments into the course.

Additional Support: WIM Fellows

We invite you to nominate an undergraduate who completed your WIM course in a previous year or a graduate student with appropriate experience to provide tutoring and perhaps workshops related to your writing assignments to your students. This is a paid position. The Hume Center will provide training (also paid) and ongoing support and will also offer suggestions for how best to incorporate this extra resource into your curriculum. Please contact WIM Coordinator Chris Kamrath for further information or to arrange an appointment.
